The city energized streets by bringing indoor vitality
outside in "flex zones" that convert street parking to
outdoor dining. Music, art and wine events and festivals
generate foot traffic, while strategically placed street
entertainers connect pockets of vitality in this
award-winning Great American Main Street.

Seattle's Joint
Enforcement Team (JET) coordinates city departments for
nightlife enforcement and regulation. JET's protocols
start with assistance and intervention, reserving
penalties and sanctions for extreme cases and
establishments that don't respond to outreach. JET's
Technical Assistance Program provides businesses with a single point-of-contact for compliance, planning and
operating standards. The JET meets monthly to coordinate
efforts.

Edmonton has
identified entertainment areas as venues in and of
themselves that need coordination for appropriate
nighttime public services. Soon to be implemented in
several hospitality zones, the 'Street as a Venue' Whyte
Avenue coordinator has implemented changes which the
business and residential community identified to
mitigate the impacts of the nighttime economy while
increasing perception of safety, cleanliness and
vibrancy.
