Planning, Developing and Managing a Music Economy

Select an Issue

Quality music and entertainment options in a city do not just happen – they require multifaceted support and planning. While traditional cultural organizations build and invest in symphony, theatre and opera, a similar investment in coordinating development of live music featured in clubs and on the street can lead to a more sociable city. Increasingly, location of venues in or near residential neighborhoods is creating conflict. This forum will explore how cities can both develop a music economy and manage impacts through education, business assistance and policy.

  • The role of music in social life and socializing

  • Developing systems for nurturing talent in your city

  • Licensing music venues (live and DJ), and how to enhance opportunity and reduce risk

  • Promoters and Promotions – the good and the bad – recognizing the difference

  • Establishing a city task force, office or commission on music

  • Street entertainment - integrating talent into a street scene
